Terry Bradshaw made headlines in late May when the Pittsburgh Steelers icon and Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback blasted his former team for pursuing 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers.
“That’s a joke,” Bradshaw said while speaking to former NFL star Dan Hampton on 103.7 The Buzz in Little Rock, Arkansas.
“That to me is just a joke. What are you gonna do? Bring him in for one year — are you kidding me? That guy needs to stay in California. Go somewhere and chew on bark and whisper to the gods out there.”
The Steelers did end up bringing in Rodgers on a one-year deal, which he signed ahead of minicamp last month.
Rodgers sat with NFL Network's Kyle Brandt on Saturday in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, where the four-time NFL MVP and one-time Super Bowl champion is taking part in Steelers training camp.
Brandt, always energetic and never afraid to put on a show, read Rodgers Bradshaw's May remarks, looking for Rodgers' take on the blunt criticism.
Rodgers chuckled before responding facetiously: "Well, I whisper to the gods every single day."
Then he took the high road with a more serious answer that showed his respect for not only Bradshaw but the rest of the league's legends as well.
"I've known Terry for a long time, being a part of Fox," Rodgers said. "Terry's a legend. He's an absolute legend. He won four Super Bowls. He's had a legendary career in the media. But Terry, like a lot of people, doesn't know me. And so he's got an idea of what he thinks about me based on what I've done, the documentary, what I've said, darkness retreat, whatever the hell you want to talk about. I'd love to get to know Terry on a deeper level. And I feel like if he gave me a chance to get to know him, then we'd have a good friendship. Because for me, I have nothing but the utmost amount of respect and deference for what the greats have done. They laid the foundation for us to be able to play in this great game, to be paid like kings and to carry on the tradition of excellence that guys like the Bradshaws of the world in the '70s and Bart Starr in the '60s and [Vince] Lombardi and Joe Montana and Steve Young and Troy Aikman and Brett Favre and all the greats ... Tom Brady ... we're standing on the backs of those guys."
Rodgers added: "So I'd love to get to know Terry on a deeper level if he's open to it. And maybe we can go chew some bark, or whatever the hell he's talking about, together."
Rodgers will join Bradshaw in the Hall sooner rather than later. He spent the first 18 seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him No. 24 overall in 2005. Rodgers made 10 Pro Bowls with the Packers before a two-year stint with the New York Jets that started with him tearing his Achilles on the Jets' fourth snap of the 2023 season.
Although Rodgers didn't make the playoffs in New York, he's hoping to return to postseason success withx Pittsburgh. The Steelers haven't won a playoff game since the 2016 season.
Despite contemplating retirement this offseason, Rodgers appears thrilled with his decision to keep playing and to sign with the Steelers.
He told Brandt that his wife, whom he married this offseason but has yet to name publicly, has been his "rock."

"When you meet the right one, and you're with the right one, you're whole world changes in a second," Rodgers said. "To have that person that unconditionally loves you behind the scenes, there's no better feeling in the world.
"I got the most incredible wife. I just really love her. I'm so thankful to have her by my side at the end. When you have that stability and that rock behind you at the house, you feel like you can do anything."
