A teenager has been saving up for years, but now their stepdad thinks he is entitled to their money.
In a since-deleted Reddit, the 19-year-old shared that they got a part-time job right after they turned 16 and have been saving up part of their paychecks every month since.
"I put a little away. nothing crazy but enough to matter. it's my money," they write, noting that "it's helped me pay for books, bus fare, [and] snacks when we didn't have food at home."
The user noted that they have "never asked" their mom and stepfather, whom they say is "not the best person," for "anything."

The teen said their stepfather "doesn't work. like at all."
"He just stays home, drinks, watches TV, and plays poker online like he's some pro," they continue. "Spoiler: he's not. he loses. a lot."
One night, the man barged into the poster's room and demanded to see their bank account. He then told the teenager they were being “selfish” and that “family helps each other out." When they asked what he needed the money for, he admitted that he wanted to “flip it” in a poker game.
“I told him no, flat out. I said, 'You’re not taking my savings so you can gamble it away.' he got red. Started yelling, said I was disrespectful and ungrateful. My mom didn’t say anything, just sat there on the couch like she was somewhere else,” the teenager shared.
An hour after this conversation, the teenager’s stepfather brought in a duffel bag and said, “If you don’t wanna act like part of this family, then get out.”

The teenager slept in their friend’s garage that night and plans to stay on her floor until they "figure things out." Meanwhile, their mom has not tried to contact them to check in or see where they are.
While they believe they "did the right thing," part of them wonder if they "should've helped."
“Maybe I was cold. or harsh. or too proud. idk. was I wrong for refusing to give my savings to a man who only wanted to gamble it?” they ended.
However, commenters assured the teenager that they were justified in wanting to hold onto their money.

“The only thing he’s flipping is his last remaining brain cell trying to justify stealing from his own kid,” one user commented, to which the original poster replied, “Right? I’m just trying to protect what’s mine, sad that he thinks that’s up for debate.”
Another person wrote, “Helping would have been paying a bill or two, filling the fridge and cupboards with a food shop. Help is not enabling addictions. Also, it's your hard earned money, no one is entitled to it except you!"
"I do worry about what your mum might be going through with him for her to sit there silently like she's checked out? Or has she always been hands off and just doesn't care? Either way, cut the toxic out and go live your best life," they added.
